"It is the absolute right of the State

NHTSA says "Uncle"
Apparently, WE WIN: The NHTSA has revised its webpage miraculously "saving" 5,000 lives and eliminating their lie. We are looking into their revision which preliminarily looks like another lie.
MADD continues to spout the same B.S. as before.

Their new statement: "In spite of the tireless efforts of thousands of highway safety advocates over the past 25 years, drunk driving continues to be a major problem in this country. Nationwide, one person every 40 minutes, approximately 35 people a day, or nearly 13,000 people each year die in traffic crashes involving a driver or a motorcycle operator with a BAC of .08 or higher."

Below is the contest that caused the change

Half of  the $20,000 reward will be paid by getMADD.com and the other half by The National Motorists Association

The National Motorists Association and getMADD.com recognize that impaired driving remains a cause of traffic accidents. However, we believe that it is dishonest and counterproductive to distort and exaggerate the magnitude of this problem. Such distortion and exaggerations have led to harmful and misguided public policies. Organizations such as MADD and government agencies epitomized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) routinely mislead the public and elected officials with claims that grossly overstate the magnitude of the "drunk driver" problem. This is not without negative consequences.

This nearly three-fold exaggeration of drunk driving caused fatalities has been perpetuated by the press, perverted judicial decisions, created arbitrary legal standards, warped enforcement priorities, and economically and socially harmed millions of decent, responsible people. It's time to put an end to this deliberate campaign of innuendo and misinformation.

NHTSA and MADD proclaimed that 17,970* people were killed by drunk drivers in 2002.

We say prove it.

And, to back up our conviction, we're offering $20,000 to the first person who can substantiate the NHTSA-MADD claim that 42 percent of all traffic fatalities, 17,970* people, were caused by drunk drivers.

The NHTSA has revised their figure for 2002. Their new figure is 17,419. We will lower the Challenge number to reflect their revision.
